This piece reflects on the value attributed to my time and labour in different
contexts. It consists in a transcription with paint of a recommendation letter
written by one of my employers whilst living in London. His company designed and manufactured luxury items. I worked for him on several occasions as
an assistant at different Trade and Design fairs, and had previously used this
letter to apply to other jobs.
His letter is a positive critique of my non-artistic labour and skills; however, it seems to describe the ideal entrepreneur artist. The time spent in both jobs – as an assistant in a fair and as an artist painting the gallery wall – is given a very different value, even if one is dependent on the other and they took place occur almost simultaneously.
